OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
Optical Coherence Tomography also known as OCT, is a non-invasive imaging method used to generate an image of the back of your eye also known as your retina.
OCT or Optical Coherence Tomography measures the thickness of your retina and optic nerve.
The OCT scan is used to diagnose many eye conditions such as diabetes related retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, macular hole, macular edema and macular pucker.
An ophthalmologist may recommend an OCT scan if you’re at risk of developing an eye disease or are over a certain age to check the health of the entire eye.
To prepare you for the OCT scan the ophthalmologist may or may not dilate your eyes with eye drops which will widen your pupil and make the examination of the retina easier.
The OCT scan is also advised pre cataract surgery to check the retina health.
